5 Ingredients To Look Out For Acne-Prone Skin

If you are suffering from acne-prone skin, we got you covered! Oil and sebum can cause your pores to be clogged which makes it more susceptible to acne development. Clogging of pores occurs when there is excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells, leading to blockage and formation of blackheads, whiteheads, and acne, resulting in inflammation. The possible causes of acne may also be a result of hormones, genetics, habits, lifestyle, diet, and sensitivity to certain skincare ingredients. Looking out for anti-acne ingredients in the ingredient list helps to increase the efficacy of your products and find products that actually work.

What Ingredients To Look Out For Acne-Prone Skin?

1. Alpine Plant

Benefit: An acne-healing anti-inflammatory ingredient that speeds up the healing of red inflamed pimples and acne scars. Helps with oil control to reduce the clogging of pores and minimize the appearance of blackheads and whiteheads.

Found in: NEW Blemish Treatment Gel consists of alpha plant to achieve blemish-free skin!

How to use:

  1. As a Spot Treatment: Apply the gel on acne during your night skincare routine after moisturiser
  2. As a Weekly Skin Renewal Mask: Apply once a week as an overnight sleeping pack
  • For Oily/Combination Skin: Apply once a week after your serum without moisturiser
  • For Dry/Sensitive Skin: Apply once a week after your moisturiser
  • For very Sensitive Skin: Leave on for 2-5 mins and rinse off

       2. Oleanolic Acid (OA)

Benefit: Oleanolic Acid is an ingredient that we may not hear often about as compared to Salicylic Acid or Glycolic Acid. However, this doesn’t mean it’s something you should miss out on. Oleanolic Acid soothes and targets active blemishes while reducing acne inflammation. It prevents acne irritations by acting as a sebum regulator to improve oil secretion and prevent clogging of pores.

Found in: NEW Blemish Treatment Gel for immediate skin relief!

How to use: Refer to ingredient 1: Alpine plant for usage of Blemish Treatment Gel.

3.  2% BHA (Salicylic Acid)

Benefit: Salicylic Acid helps to gently exfoliate and clear up dead skin cells while removing dirt, impurities, and sebum trapped in clogged pores. Its acidic qualities effectively removes pore-clogging acne tissues such as blackheads and whiteheads, for a clearer blemish-free complexion.

Found in: Blemish Treatment Gel and Advanced Healing Elixir to gently exfoliate!

How to use: Refer to ingredient 1: Alpine plant for usage of Blemish Treatment Gel. For Advanced Healing Elixir, use it as a moisturiser after cleansing and toning, before applying the Blemish Treatment Gel.

4. Vitamin C

Benefit: Known as a potent antioxidant, this ingredient helps to reduce acne inflammation, hyperpigmentation, protect your skin and achieve radiant skin.          [PRO-TIP: Products with Vitamin C can be used in the day and night but you must apply sunscreen if you are using it in the day to prevent adverse effects]

Found in: Plumicious Brightening Serum to fade acne scars and hyperpigmentations!

How to use: Dispense 1-2 drops of Plumicious Brightening Serum, after cleansing and toning and gently pat onto face. Keep away from direct light to prevent oxidation.

5. Niacinamide

Benefit: Niacinamide is an amazing ingredient with multiple skin benefits. When used to treat acne,  its anti-inflammatory properties reduce acne swelling, redness, and scars. Acne scarring is often primarily caused by inflammations, which is due to the body being unable to deem the acne as a wound and signal for healing attempts. Hence, this ingredient curbs inflammation before it occurs to prevent swelling and scars.

Here are some of our products that contain niacinamide: Deep Sea Glow Serum, Plumicious Brightening Serum, 7-Day Brightening Rescue Mask & Blemish Treatment Gel!

How to use: Refer to the above for the same usage of Plumicious Brightening Serum. For Deep Sea Glow Serum, dispense 1-2 drops, after cleansing and toning, and gently pat onto face. Keep away from direct light. For 7-Day Brightening Rescue Mask, leave on for 15 - 20 mins after applying toner. Gently pat remaining serum into the skin. No rinsing necessary. The excess essence in the pouch can be applied all over the body.

What Ingredients To Avoid For Acne-Prone Skin?

1. Sulfates

Sulfates could irritate skin and obstruct the skin’s natural oil production, leaving skin feeling dry and stripped. It is encouraged to avoid sulfates especially when you have acne as it can cause your skin to peel, flare up, and breakout.

2. Parabens

Parabens can cause inflammation and irritation. It is best for acne-prone skin to avoid this as it exacerbates acne and prevents healing.

3. Synthetic Fragrance

Synthetic fragrances are developed in labs and are not natural scents. It may cause skin allergies and inflammation which makes acne treatment harder to clear.

4. Lanolin

Lanolin could clog pores and cause the formation of acne. It may even aggravate acne and worsen inflammation.

5. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)

SLS could cause skin irritation and strip off the natural oil from skin while clogging pores. It is a harsh reactant to your skin and could increase acne growth.

As a clean beauty brand, Glowfully is conscious to not add any of these skin irritant ingredients and all products are tailor-made for sensitive, eczema, and acne-prone skin.
